The intent of our English curriculum is to provide students with both the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in their future pathway whilst developing in them a deep appreciation and love of reading and writing. We want all students to be able to communicate effectively through their written and spoken English. We want our students to be able to respond successfully to the ideas and perspectives of others, as well as understand the rich heritage of literature they are surrounded by.
Our curriculum is challenging and crafted by subject experts to ensure that all students achieve broad and deep subject expertise. We strive to empower our students by providing them with the knowledge and skills required to critically analyse and evaluate to make informed judgements. As well as this, we encourage students to be creative; to develop their ability to craft extended writing pieces; to continue to develop the skills required to read independently, and for pleasure.
Across the key stages, students in English explore and study a range of literature and non-fiction texts from different eras and cultures, written by authors from diverse backgrounds and contexts. We want to expose students to ambitious and diverse literature, developing within them a love of English. We endeavour to do this by ensuring our curriculum exposes students to the best of what has been said and thought, developing their cultural capital to support their navigation through life.
