Criminology
Back to Subjects MenuWHAT IS THE INTENT OF THE CRIMINOLOGY CURRICULUM?
Criminology is the scientific study of the causes, control, and consequences of criminal behaviour. It explores why crime is committed, drawing on biological, psychological, and sociological explanations, and examines how the criminal justice system operates. The subject also considers how crime influences social policy and public perception.
At the Marsh Academy, the key objective of teaching Criminology is to ensure all students experience a curriculum rich in criminological theory, research, and real-world application. Students are encouraged to engage in debates on crucial criminological issues and to apply their knowledge to real-life contexts within the criminal justice system. This includes fostering a critical awareness of contemporary social, cultural, and global issues.
A core part of our curriculum is the development of digital literacy. Students will learn to navigate and critically evaluate digital sources of information, use digital tools for independent research, and present findings using appropriate digital formats. They will also explore how digital technologies are used in modern policing, criminal investigations, and crime prevention strategies, including the role of social media, surveillance, and cybercrime.
We aim to help students consider the social implications of crime and criminality, including government policies and police initiatives, using empathy and informed judgement. Students will acquire academic skills such as:
- Independent research
- Report writing
- Analytical and evaluative thinking
- Reviewing the validity of theories and research evidence
They will also develop an objective and comprehensive vocabulary to discuss sensitive issues concisely and precisely in both written reports and spoken debates.
Practical skills include creativity, planning, organisation, and the ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, such as police investigations and courtroom procedures. Students will examine real-life cases to understand how criminological theory is applied in practice.
Finally, the course provides insight into career options within the criminal justice sector, including policing, probation, social work, and forensic services.
