Citizenship
Back to Subjects MenuWHAT IS THE INTENT OF THE CITIZENSHIP CURRICULUM?
The intent of our Citizenship curriculum is to encourage students to take a critical and thorough approach to understanding democracy, government, British values, and how to be active participants in modern British society. Through the AQA GCSE in Citizenship Studies, students explore how young people can be engaged citizens and advocates within their local, national, and global communities.
Students gain a deeper knowledge of democracy, government, and law, while developing essential skills such as:
- Creating sustained and reasoned arguments
- Presenting multiple viewpoints
- Planning and executing practical citizenship actions to benefit society
A key component of our curriculum is the development of digital literacy. Students learn to critically evaluate online sources, recognise bias in digital media, and use digital platforms to research, communicate, and advocate for change. They explore how digital tools and social media can be used to influence public opinion, participate in democratic processes, and organise citizenship actions. These skills are vital for navigating the digital landscape of modern civic life and are highly valued by employers and higher education institutions.
Students also develop the ability to:
- Critically evaluate arguments
- Weigh evidence
- Seek alternative interpretations and sources of information
These analytical skills empower students to become informed and responsible citizens who can engage thoughtfully with complex societal issues.
The key themes in our Citizenship curriculum are:
- Life in Modern Britain – exploring identity, diversity, and the role of media and digital communication
- Rights and Responsibilities – understanding legal rights, human rights, and responsibilities in a digital age
- Politics and Participation – examining how citizens can influence politics, including through digital activism
- Taking Citizenship Action – planning and carrying out informed, purposeful action, often using digital tools to support campaigns and initiatives
Our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make a positive impact in society, both offline and online, and to prepare them for further study and careers where civic awareness and digital competence are essential.
