The Marsh Boat Builders
Students from Years 7 – 10 have been constructing a fleet of three boats as part of their extended day activity during the last year. The boats started off as flat sheets of plywood and after scaling up the plans the various panels were marked out and then cut out. Very quickly they began to look boat shaped but there was still a lot of work to do; fitting the seat and gunwales, making a skeg and a rubbing strip to go along the bottom before sealing the joints with glass reinforced resin (GRP). The boats have been painted in bright colours to reflect three of the different mini schools. They are small rowing boats suitable for sheltered inland water to fish from or simply mess about in.
The boat building has been a part of the Business and Enterprise focus of the school encouraging the students to work as a team and to give them experience of working on larger projects. The boats were successfully tested in a makeshift pool and found to sit very well in the water. Mr N Barratt
