Science

Key Stage 3

Students have three lessons of Science every week. They study a variety of units that cover some areas of the National Curriculum requirements at Key Stage 3.

In year 7, students follow the Project Based Learning PoS, projects combine skills in science, maths, humanities etc.

In year 8, pupils are exposed to a greater level of experimental work in preparation for starting their GCSE studies. Pupils will study a variety of topics in Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

The students’ work is continually assessed and culminates in end of year exams. The units studied include a variety of practical work and students are encouraged to take an investigative approach to experimental work. Emphasis is placed on the enjoyment of Science within a safe, working environment.

Key Stage 4

All pupils study the Edexcel Core Science GCSE in KS4 with external exams accounting for 60% of the final grade, 30% through Internal Assessment Activities and a practical assessment the final 10%.

Pupils may opt to follow Edexcel Additional Science GCSE with external exams accounting for 60% of the final grade, 30% through Internal Assessment Activities and a practical assessment the final 10%. There is no summative end of subject exam.

It is vital that pupils perform well throughout, as any exam that the pupils sit is a proper GCSE exam, each with the potential of raising the pupil final grade by nearly 1 grade boundary.

Pupils will be compared nationally at interview or application to 6th form studies, with an expectation that a Core and Additional Science course has been followed. Those wishing to have a professional career are advised to follow both.
