NEWS

May 2010

This term all the mini schools have been extremely busy raising money for our charities: Demelza House, the Make a Wish Foundation, the RNLI and the Down’s Syndrome Association. Activities have included sponsored silences, a very successful non-uniform day and a bucket shake for loose change. All of the mini-schools are planning a last drive to raise as much as possible before presenting cheques to their chosen charities in assemblies towards the end of the academic year.

Our main focus this term has been on improving the standard of uniform and attendance; we would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that all students are required to wear full uniform as stated in the Academy Policy.

Since the beginning of term students in Years 10 and 11 have been focusing on preparing for their final exams. All students have received tips on revision skills, as well as clear pencil cases with appropriate equipment. Parents and carers are encouraged to ensure that students bring these with them to the exams. We would like to wish all students every success in their forthcoming examinations!

March 2010

This term the Red Mini School has been focusing on its charity fund raising activities and students have certainly been inventive in their efforts. Each class has been challenged to raise at least £50 and some groups are well on the way to achieving this. JT not only delivered an inspirational assembly but they managed to keep quiet in a sponsored silence, as well as organising a bucket shake to rid us of our loose change. HF are raffling an Easter Egg, whilst CXGR have held a cake sale and NR are planning one for the last day of term. JXGR have continued to collect old mobile phones, as well as unwanted Play Station Games; however, the prize for the most original activity currently goes to TS, and Mr Shepherd, who raised money by sponsoring individuals to ride a unicycle! In order to swell the coffers the entire Mini School will be going Dotty for Demelza on 1st April as part of a national campaign to help generate funds.

February 2010

It has been a busy term for the Red Mini School with students participating in a range of activities from go kart racing at Buckmore Park, where some students learnt that brakes were actually quite vital, to participating in the non-school uniform day and throwing themselves, often literally, into team building activities with the Army. In addition, each tutor group has been set a challenge to raise at least £50 for our chosen charity, Demelza House, and they are currently coming up with a range of suggestions how to do so.

Furthermore, it has been wonderful to celebrate the success of the following students from Red School who entered GCSE Maths early; particular congratulations go to: Connor Alexander, Melissa Caryl, Amy Thompsett, James Giltinane and Miles Matthews.

December 2009

It has been another busy term for the members of Red School. Students have successfully taken part in activities such as the Business and Enterprise Day as well as the school concert. Furthermore, a number of students have earned particular praise for their attendance, application and achievement. These include, Phyllida Godfrey, James Giltinane, Christie Avis, Kayleigh Avis, Connor Alexander, Ashley Hayward, Michaela Hodge, Rachel Kelly, Samantha Mendham, Connor Myring, Adam Robertson, Ben Smith, Shaun Smith. Graeme Stewart and Casey Tallis. Congratulations to all of them. A special mention goes to Kvitka Mykhanchuck who consistently excels in all areas and who was given a special award in a recent assembly by the Chairman of the Governors. As we prepare for the end of the school term we would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and healthy New Year.

October 2009

Congratulations to all Red School students who competed in the Inter School Sports Activities on the last day of term. We are extremely proud that we won the competition; it was great to see so many students taking part and having fun.
Congratulations to Laura Maidment and Jay Christy who were elected as Head Girl and Head Boy; Ashley Hayward and Monique Smith are Sports Captains. This will be a busy year for them all. The school are supporting Demelza House as their school charity and are currently in the process of putting together a cook book with favourite recipes in it. These books will be on sale after half-term and may well make useful Christmas presents. We are also organising a Bring and Buy Sale.

July 2009

As we reach the end of the year students and staff are looking forward to a break after another busy term! Congratulations go to Laura Maidment and Jay Christy, who have been elected as Head Girl and Boy for 2009-10 and Monique Smith and Ashley Hayward, who are taking on the responsibility of Sports Captains for Red School. Further congratulations go to all the students who took part in the Star Academy competition. These included: Monique Smith, Matthew Sait, Kayleigh Avis, Kvitka Mykhanchuk and Rebecca Christmas. Well done to all of you!

We also acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Sophie Daws who successfully competed in a National Golf Competition, along with other members of the school’s golf team and Oliver, her brother. Olly was a member of the B team who, sadly, did not get through to the finals, even though his score was better than the members of the A team. Your time will undoubtedly come - Olly – just remember your victory over Mr Double!

A number of students were also nominated for Tri-angle awards a competition run by Kent Safe Schools for their contribution to the community, and, as a result certificates were awarded to: Linzi Alexander, Sophie Daws, Emma Paice, Miles Matthews and Sophie Thunder-Loker.

Students from the mini school have been extremely helpful in welcoming Year 6 students, attending a Parents’ Evening, as well as helping them with a range of activities on induction days; particular thanks go to Tom Mayne, Rachel Kelly and Crystal Chapman as well as Oliver Daws and Amber Blake.

April 2009

It has been another busy and successful term for students in Red School. At the time of writing, Red School students and staff have raised £570.95 for Comic Relief. An amazing effort and well worth a quick dip in the sea. We are now focusing our efforts on raising money for the mini-school’s chosen charity, Demelza House.

Year 11 students are busy preparing for their end of year exams and completing last minute assignments, whilst Year 10s have just returned from work experience. It has been gratifying to receive so many positive comments about the behaviour and attitude of Year 10, well done. A special mention goes to Angela Jarvis for her excellent performance in the science modules and Michelle Stone who received a glowing report from her work placement. In addition, Mr Gardner is helping students train for the School Sports Day after school on a Thursday; numbers have been steadily increasing and everyone is always welcome. We have also been running a tutor group competition to identify the tutor group with the best attendance. Congratulations go to CXGR who have won for three weeks in a row.
