Key Stage 3

Year 7 provides a basic grounding in the principles of music. Students investigate the Musical Elements, Programme Music, African Music, the Conventions of Ternary Form and Reggae Music.

Year 8 students build on their skills gained from Year 7 and also investigate the Conventions of Harmony and Chords in Music, The Blues and the Conventions of Film Music, Popular song and the uses of Music in a Commercial Break.

Key Stage 4

GCSE Music: Through the syllabus students learn about a wide variety of music focusing on four Areas of Study: Western Classical Music (1600-1899), Music in the 20th Century, Popular Music in Context and World Music. Students will also focus on a set of specific musical works, each relating to an Area of Study.

Every student will be expected to create an audio portfolio consisting of compositions based on musical ideas studied during the course. Students will also be expected to include solo and ensemble performances within this portfolio.
