    Understanding Progress in English - A Guide for Parents

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, students are presented with a curriculum that fulfils the National Curriculum and Key Stage 3 strategy guidelines. Students gain experience in:

• Original writing
• Media, Drama
• Novel study
• Poetry
• Shakespeare

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, all students work towards GCSEs in English Language some students are also entered for English Literature. Both courses consist of coursework and examination tasks.

The English Language coursework makes up 40% of the final grade and includes oral and written tasks.

The Literature coursework contributes 30% of the final grade and is generally written work. The coursework tasks are:

• Original writing
• Media
• Prose study
• Twentieth Century drama
• Shakespeare

Post 16

In Key Stage 5, the English department offers two courses: GCSE re-sits for those who wish to improve their GCSE grades, and English Literature following the examination board specification.

English Literature A-level:
English Literature AS and A-level covers all aspects of literature, including pre and post 1914 poetry, prose and drama.
