Advice for Parents / Carers

You can do an enormous amount to help your child succeed at school, especially with the new routines and structures they will encounter in their transition to secondary school. Some children with Additional Educational Needs may have difficulties with organisational skills. Parents see their children on a one to one basis and can make an enormous difference by simply spending half an hour a day on helping their child with organising equipment and homework in preparation for the following school day. Some of the following suggestions may also be useful:

At the Beginning of the Year
• Invest in some highlighter pens and help your child to colour code their timetable
• Ensure your child has all the correct equipment required for use at school
• Ensure your child has an area where school books can be stored and homework can be done

During the Year
• Check your child’s homework diary regularly and check your parent portal on the MAG regularly to monitor progress.
• More importantly, when possible, discuss with your child what they are learning in different subjects.
• Become involved by helping with homework whenever you can.
• Teach your child how to pack their bag the night before school.
• Give plenty of praise and encouragement at all times.

Above all, we usually find that a positive parent results in a positive pupil who is likely to be more receptive to learning. If there are any issues which concern you, please contact the school so we may ensure the relevant support is in place to enable your child to succeed in their studies.
