YEAR 9 STUDENTS COOK UP A LESSON IN HEALTHY EATING
Thursday 1 July 2010
Year 9 Health and Social Care students at the Marsh Academy had a practical lesson in healthy eating on Friday (28th May) when they took part in a Food Matters cooking event.
The session – led by Shirley Waters – aimed to teach students how to be creative to make healthy meals without compromising on taste. Students were shown how to make such delicious snacks as crispy cheese tortilla, fruity pasta salad and quick smoked mackerel pate, and particularly enjoyed the tasting sessions at the end of each demonstration!
The session was organised as part of a unit dedicated to diet and health within the Health and Social Care BTEC. As well as practical demonstrations, students learnt about the “Eat Well Plate”, which shows what proportions of different food types make up a healthy diet, and discussed the Change 4 Life campaign, making recipes from the Change 4 Life website.
Janet Thomas, Health and Social Care Course Leader, said “the lesson was a fantastic chance for students to see how easy it is to eat healthily. Almost all of the students tried – and enjoyed – something they’d never tasted before, so they really saw that healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring!” At the end of the session, Shirley congratulated students on their participation in the lesson, saying “you are a credit to your teachers. I thoroughly enjoyed today!”
