The Stixx Challenge

During the week beginning 16 November our students were learning lessons of a different kind when they took part in a whole week of enterprise activities as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. Students from Years 7 to 12 took time out of their normal timetables to take part in a wide range of events.

Year 7 students designed their own T-shirts on an environmental theme using recycled accessories and embellishments. The prize for ‘Most effort and dedication to task’ went to Mrs Hobday’s group (7aPb4) who created some fantastic designs and were very enthusiastic.

Year 8 took part in an event run by Bright Green Enterprise called Green Dragons – where they were challenged to design a product out of recycled material and come up with a marketing campaign, the winning team of Tyler Brabham, Erin Clarke, Emily Cawood, Chloe Howe and Billy Carden won the competition and the prize of £40.

Year 9 made and marketed fresh fruit smoothies with the help of EBP Kent. The winning team was made up of Bleu Maloney, Joe Molloy, Robbie Osborne, Emma Maidment and Koppa’Ny Kova’cs. Kayleigh Avis, a Year 9 student, said: “It was a fun activity and it was good because everyone got involved”

Year 10 took part in the annual Make Your Mark Challenge with Mikey Harris, Harvey Laker and Jordan Baker winning the competition and going forward to represent the academy in the next round, they also took home a £15 gift card each.EBP Kent also ran a Learn to Earn challenge day with Year 11. This consisted of a variety of team-based challenges including the Stixx challenge where students had to design furniture out of rolled up newspaper and cable ties! The highest scoring students who won paid work experience with EBP were Linzi Alexander, Andrew Curran, Lilly McLaughlin, Melissa Brown, Jack Sheryer, Amy Thomsett and Rejoice Misi.

Post-16 students had some great advice during a three-part workshop run by Jill Tipping and Enterprise Gateway on subjects including financial security, building business relationships and communication skills. Those that took part thought the sessions were fantastic and certainly gave them some ‘food for thought’. Post-16 student, James Reid, said: “it was a fascinating day, very educational and very well presented”
