KS3 Maths—3D Home Design Package
Wednesday 29 July 2009
This term, the Maths department successfully related maths to the real world of architecture. Students in maths groups 8a1 and 8c were given the task to design their ideal home using a 3D home design package. The package has many amazing features. It has hundreds of pre-designed modern and traditional furniture components to select from. One feature particularly appreciated by students is the Virtual Tour. This allows the designer to view their design as if he or she was inside the house itself. It is amazing!
As for the activity itself, this was an open task. Students had to investigate the features of the software and come up with a design. They worked independently on their design, but discussed the feature collaboratively with others. Thomas Ward in 8c1, who wants to be an architect, went as far as researching on the internet to find the current UK building regulations to come up with a professional design. Anthony Clayton in 8a1 came up with a one bedroom design featuring a traditional wood fire place beside a large comfortable looking sofa. Lucy Lee came up with an excellent unique design. Her design features an octagonal floor plan, very well proportioned and a strong modern, contemporary feel.
In short, all students enjoyed this open ended task and gained a great deal from it, well done.
